Captive bred Puerto Rican pink toe tarantula needs a minimum 10-gallon tank. However, if and when you can provide larger, they will love it! Heigh is essential as they are considered tree dwellers and spin their webs up high. They are very active creatures.

Keeping your ornamental baboon tarantulas temperature at 60 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit is great. Ideally the enclosure should be between 78- and 82-degrees. Under tank heaters and lamp fixtures that we have on sale specifically for them call the creature combo dome can provide the correct amount of heat. Monitor their temperature with a thermometer in the tank.

In the wild, Puerto Rican pink toes do live in humid climates, it is very important to maintain a humidity level between 65 and 75 percent. Keeping the humidity level high can be one of the most challenging parts of having a “spider”. To raise humidity, we have the Reptile Fogger System that will mist the enclosure, or you can hand mist every two to three days with clean water. This will provide the essential humidity for your pet and benefit any live plants in the enclosure. Use a hygrometer to keep track of their humidity levels.

Proper ventilation should be provided with screening as a top on an enclosure or in the construction of a custom enclosure. When it gets warm outside, collard lizards can be kept in outdoor cages. It is important to be sure the enclosure provides shelter from the rain, basking areas, and shady areas. Healthy UVB is provided from the sun. Branches should be added to their enclosures because they enjoy climbing.

These spiders are considered a humid specie and enjoy anything to climb on. They need to keep entertained for better quality of life. Bare minimum you need at least a plant, climbing toy, branch and places to hide. We recommend a lot more than that so they will exercise and use natural instinct strategically.

Handling pink toe tarantulas is easy if done correctly. They tolerate handling as long as you allow them to move when they want to. Especially if they are regularly handled from a young age. They are very intelligent, incredibly tame and would only ever nip if feeling threatened. Sitting down with them is the best since they can become skittish. A foot of a fall could hurt them. They are one of a few specie of spider that CAN BE housed with others but again that is optional since it can certainly go either way when it comes to wanting a buddy or living alone.

Lighting and Temperature

Humidity

Pink Toes prefer a humidity of 65%-75%. It isn’t usually of main concern when you have a

humid hide or burrow available. You can also mist occasionally to mess with their humidity levels. You will want to keep close watch for any mold growth due to humidity.

It is important that you clean all “stale food” or uneaten prey after 24 hours. Pink Toed Tarantulas are insectivores, meaning they eat primarily insects to receive the proper nutrients they require. They are not usually picky eaters. Insects, such as crickets and as an adult they will enjoy a pinky mouse or even small lizard as a treat etc. Adding the gut load to their bugs will give them extra vitamin/mineral supplement and calcium.

Water is important, but too much water leads to a wet and to humid of enclosure.  Change the water daily in just a small water dish. A few water fishes are a plus.

Tarantula Substrate

Peat moss and eco earth substrate free of pesticides is a favorite substrate of the orange starburst baboon tarantulas. Make sure that the Exo Terra or eco earth is 2-3″ deep and replaced every 5 months at least. They will need plants to climb (safe), logs and branches. Bird toys are an exceptional active toy. Let me tell you, these spiders love to climb! Remove soiled and dirty substrate daily.
